Join physician and writer Jason Karlawish in a virtual discussion of his book The Problem of Alzheimer’s, called “a lucid, opinionated history of the science, politics, and care involved in the fight against the century’s most problematic disease.”Karlawish will take guests on a history tour of American health care and policy’s combined failure to prevent today’s Alzheimer’s crisis and then reflect on the state of today’s science and tomorrow’s treatments to show how we can learn to live with dementia. Speaker Bio: Jason Karlawish is a physician and writer. He researches and writes about issues at the intersections of bioethics, aging, and the neurosciences. He is the author of The Problem of Alzheimer’s: How Science, Culture, and Politics Turned a Rare Disease into a Crisis and What We Can Do About It and the novel Open Wound: The Tragic Obsession of Dr. William Beaumont and has written essays for the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Forbes, The Hill, Nature, STAT, and the Philadelphia Inquirer. He is a Professor of Medicine, Medical Ethics and Health Policy, and Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania and Co-Director of the Penn Memory Center, where he cares for patients.
